URGENT WARNING RE LEGAL OWNERSHIP OF BLACK POWDER MUZZLE LOADING FIREARMS AND OF BLACK POWDER REVOLVERS

Dear Member,

Our member in Witbank, Mpumalanga, has notified us of a SAPS procedure to verify the validity of all Black Powder competencies and permits in their district.

The same could be happening in your district shortly.

If you use Black Powder firearms, and have a muzzle loading competency or a black powder revolver, we advise that you urgently take notice of the content of the attached documents issued to our member on this matter, and ascertain that your house is in order.

We believe the text in the document referring to the legal aspects of owning and using muzzle loaders or black powder revolvers; under the heading General Competency Certificate, to be misleading.

The text of the first button should read that one has to renew one’s competency for muzzle loaders 90 days before the expiry of the certificate.  Competency in this regard is awarded for 10 years.   That means that you have to submit your renewal application 90 days before the competency expires (use the issuing date to calculate the 10-year period).

You can access the relevant SAPS documents which were handed to our member  HERE and HERE

Kind regards

Herman Els
