SAPS DIRECTIVE: SUB-CATEGORIES OF COMPETENCIES TO POSSESS A FIREARM
On 10-01-2017 SAPS issued a Directive to all DFOs in which the different sub-categories of competencies to possess a firearm are explained.
The Directive was specifically issued to mitigate the situation where applications for licences for semi-auto rifles were frequently wrongly refused because the applicant did not have a competency to possess a rifle. This despite the applicant having been issued with a competency to possess a semi-auto rifle based on his/her completion of the Unit Standard "Handle and Use of a Hand Machine Carbine".
