LOCKDOWN RENEWAL OF LICENCES: EXAMPLE LETTER TO NATIONAL COMMISSIONER FOR EXTENSION OF SUBMISSION DATE
We are aware that SAPS accepts applications for renewal of firearm licences within the 90 days before the licence lapses (but not after the licence has expired).
Members must please let the office know if their applications for renewal within the 90 days before licence lapsing date, are not accepted by their DFO.
However, if you would want to remain on the very safe side, you can apply for approval to submit your renewal application after the lockdown if the 90 days of your renewal falls within the dates of the lockdown.
Such an application must be directed at the National Commissioner of Police at the following Email address:
Genl. K.J. Sithole, National Commissioner of Police (in his capacity as Registrar of Firearms) - By Email: [email protected]
Example of wording of such a letter:
Heading: your ID number Initials and Surname
Due to the Covid-19 lockdown I am unable to submit the applications for renewal of the following firearms I legally own, 90 days before the licences lapse:
Type of firearm (handgun, rifle, shotgun, semi-auto rifle)
Make of firearm
In terms of section 28(6) of the Firearms Control Act (60 of 2000) I hereby request you to please extend the period of validity of my above-mentioned firearm to the end of June 2020 as I will not be able to apply in time as required by section 24 of the FCA.
It is absolutely your decision to make use of this possible option.
Please remain safe and protect yourself at all times
