Official SAPS Stance On Renewal of Firearm Licences

VOL. 13 (11) - 06-03-2017

PLEASE DO NOT DO NOT REACT TO PRESS STATEMENTS RE HANDING IN FIREARMS

Dear member

Please do not react to any press article re handing in of illegal and/or so-called unlicensed estate firearms under the announced amnesty (running from 1 April to 30 September 2017).

Wait until we know what the prescripts of the amnesty are.  We will communicate those to members the moment we have the relevant government gazette in which these will be explained.

If you did not renew your white licence on time, and you still have a green licence for such a firearm (or one pasted in the old blue ID book) you are legally in possession of such a firearm.

Such a firearm is thus not an illegal firearm with which a crime was committed.

Secondly all estate firearms should at least be licensed under the 1969 Act, and there should thus either be a green licence for such a firearm, or a licence pasted in the old blue ID-book.  Such a firearm is also not an illegal firearm with which a crime was committed.

Thus, please do not hand in firearms.  Please wait until we know what the amnesty entails before you take any action.  We will advise the moment we know.

Regards
Herman Els
